Fly-QMA: Automated analysis of mosaic imaginal discs in Drosophila

It is becoming clear that quantitative models are needed to unravel the complexities of many biological systems. In this manuscript Bernasek et al. introduce a computational framework that automates the quantification of mosaic analysis for Drosophila imaginal discs, a common setting for studies of developmental processes. They validate the performance of their framework using both real and synthetic data.

Direct coupling analysis of epistasis in allosteric materials

Allostery in proteins is the property of highly specific responses to ligand binding at a distant site. To inform protocols of de novo drug design, it is fundamental to understand the impact of mutations on allosteric regulation and whether it can be predicted from evolutionary correlations. In this work Bravi et al. consider allosteric architectures artificially evolved to optimize the cooperativity of binding at allosteric and active site.

Modular analysis of the control of flagellar Ca2+-spike trains produced by CatSper and CaV channels in sea urchin sperm

How the calcium spikes crucial to sperm navigation are regulated and timed remains elusive. Different calcium channels have been implicated by indirect experimental evidence giving rise to a complex network of putative interacting components. Priego-Espinosa et al. gained insight into this network's structure and function by modelling it as a set of candidate modules that could be studied separately.

Metastasis is difficult to study because it happens deep in the body and involves a fraction of cells from the primary tumor. Individual cells within a tumor can behave very differently, leading to failures of therapies. Padmanaban et al. exploit heterogeneity to develop new methods to identify molecular mechanisms of metastasis.

Previous studies have successfully built spiking network models that learn a variety of computational tasks, yet often the learning involved is not biologically plausible. Maes et al. investigate a model that uses biological-plausible neurons and learning rules to learn a specific computational task: the learning of spatiotemporal sequences.
