Lanakila Ānuenue Papaya
Introducing our new plush character, Lanakila Ānuenue Papaya! Our readers overwhelmingly voted for the Hawaiian Papaya to be our next plushie, and our artist created a very creative character! Follow Lanakila on Twitter to learn about papayas, biotechnology, and agriculture in Hawaii!
Our design features a cute papaya fruit with a papaya leaf forming a “hand”, a papaya flower decorating its head, and a small papaya leaf as a reminder about the impact of the ringspot disease on papaya farms.
Lanakila means “triumphant” in Hawaiian, and Ānuenue means “rainbow”, named after the Rainbow Papaya which was genetically engineered to fight off the papaya ringspot virus.
Lanakila is gender-neutral. Papaya plants are fascinating and can be male, female, both male and female, and there are also “fruiting males.” We want to educate people about the diversity in plants, so your papaya plushie can be whatever you prefer! “Lanakila” is gender-neutral, while “Lana” is feminine and “Kila” is masculine. Choose the name that suits your papaya.

Adopt-a-Crop: $5,000
Work with us to design a creative plush character to represent your favorite crop. Biotech or conventionally-bred plants are welcome. You could choose one of the two described here, other than the papaya which is already being made. We will produce 250 plushies with your design, and send you up to 50 of them.
