Wie Bildung in Krisenzeiten gelingen kann: Leopoldina veröffentlicht fünfte Ad-hoc-Stellungnahme zur Coronavirus-Pandemie

Die Coronavirus-Pandemie und die Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung des Infektionsgeschehens haben dazu geführt, dass viele Kitas und Schulen ihrem Bildungsauftrag zeitweilig gar nicht oder nur sehr eingeschränkt nachkommen konnten. Eine verlässliche technische und organisatorische Infrastruktur, die eine vollständige Schließung von Bildungseinrichtungen auffangen könnte, ist in Deutschland noch nicht vorhanden. Kinder und Jugendliche, deren Familien und pädagogische Fachkräfte sind deswegen in besonderem Maße von der aktuellen Krise betroffen. Die Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina zeigt in ihrer heute veröffentlichten Ad-hoc-Stellungnahme „Coronavirus-Pandemie: Für ein krisenresistentes Bildungssystem“ Maßnahmen auf, die geeignet sind, das bestehende Bildungssystem unter Krisenbedingungen widerstandsfähiger und flexibler zu machen. Die Stellungnahme richtet sich an die verantwortlichen Akteurinnen und Akteure des Bildungswesens, also Ministerien, Landesinstitute, Bildungsträger sowie Kitas und Schulen.

Contact Tracing Apps against COVID-19: German National Academy Leopoldina hosts international virtual panel discussion

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile software applications have been developed worldwide. Such apps are part of a wider array of digital tools for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. Which technical questions occur in the development of these apps? What ethical aspects must be considered? How can these apps be helpful in the relaxation of restrictions on public and economic life? International experts will discuss these issues at an English-language virtual panel discussion organised by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina on Wednesday, 15 July, 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m CEST.

Energy transition 2030: academies describe path to carbon neutrality in Europe

With the European Green Deal, the European Union has set itself the goal of operating carbon-neutral by 2050. An important element of this commitment is an energy transition away from the use of fossil energy carriers towards generation and use of renewable energies. To this end, the German Academies of Sciences recommend "no regret" measures, the introduction of a standard cross-sector CO₂ price, including a minimum price, and comprehensive changes to the infrastructure. With their ad-hoc-statement published today, "Energy transition 2030: Europe's path to carbon neutrality“, the academies present a compact series of recommendations in light of the German EU Council Presidency starting on 1 July.

Schulen brauchen in den MINT-Fächern eine curricular verankerte Zusammenarbeit mit außerschulischen Lernorten, um über die aktuelle Krise hinaus zukunftsfest zu werden. Dazu gehört eine Stärkung regionaler Strukturen durch eine enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen Bund, Ländern und Kommunen. Weiterhin sind tragfähige Konzepte für das digitale Lehren und Lernen zu entwickeln und umzusetzen und der Aufbau multiprofessioneller Teams notwendig. Seine fünf Kernforderungen zur MINT-Bildung stellte heute das Nationale MINT Forum (NMF) in Berlin vor. Bereits zum März erarbeitet, finden sie nun Bestätigung in der aktuellen Corona-Krise.

Medical care and patient-oriented research in an adaptive healthcare system – German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina presents fourth ad-hoc-statement on the coronavirus pandemic

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has issued a fourth ad-hoc-statement on the coronavirus pandemic. It is dedicated to the topic: "Medical Care and Patient-Oriented Research in an Adaptive Healthcare System". The paper focuses on short- and medium-term aspects of medical and care services under the conditions of a sustained pandemic and identifies long-term measures that lead to a more resilient and adaptive healthcare system. The authors recommend a needs-based system focusing on patient well-being and quality assurance, rather than a primarily profit-oriented approach. It should appreciate all employees and integrate innovations as well as digital solutions. The aim is an adaptive healthcare system where the public health service and the ambulatory and stationary sectors work together well, and research results are promptly integrated into clinical practice.

Digitale Gesundheit, Grundlagenforschung und Insektensterben – Wissenschaftsakademien legen drei Stellungnahmen für virtuellen G7-Gipfel vor

In Vorbereitung des in diesem Jahr als Videokonferenz organisierten Gipfeltreffens der G7-Staaten im Juni 2020 haben Wissenschaftsakademien der G7-Staaten und sechs weiterer Staaten drei Stellungnahmen zu den Themen Digitalisierung im Gesundheitswesen, Grundlagenforschung und Insektensterben vorgelegt. In diesen Stellungnahmen der G-Science Academies werden der Politik Handlungsoptionen aufgezeigt, um den Herausforderungen in diesen Bereichen gemeinsam zu begegnen. Die Stellungnahmen wurden in virtuellen Treffen der Wissenschaftsakademien unter Beteiligung von Expertinnen und Experten der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina erarbeitet.

Endangered cultural heritage on the seafloor: The Leopoldina publishes discussion paper on underwater archaeology in the North and Baltic Seas

In many regions of the world, the seafloor contains a fascinating archive of human history. This also applies to the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Their floors are not only home to shipwrecks, they also harbour remnants of human settlement from prehistoric times when these seas were still just dry land. Yet this underwater cultural heritage is not enjoying sufficient protection. Gravel and sand harvesting, wind turbine construction, cable laying and fishing activities could lead to these archaeological traces being lost forever. The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has released the discussion paper “Traces under Water – Exploring and Protecting the Cultural Heritage in the North Sea and Baltic Sea” to raise awareness of the value of the cultural heritage found in the depths of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The paper’s authors describe the importance of this heritage and recommend measures for effectively protecting it.

Das Nationale MINT Forum (NMF) beginnt heute gemeinsam mit ausgewählten Partnern eine bundesweite MINT-Qualitätsoffensive für außerschulische MINT-Initiativen. Auf der Basis eines Orientierungsrahmens werden MINT-NetzwerkerInnen zu „Multiplikatoren für Qualitätsentwicklung“ ausgebildet und strukturierte Begleit- und Schulungsprogramme vor Ort durchgeführt.

Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz: Anpassung hilft Betroffenen und Wissenschaft

Der Bundestag hat heute eine Anpassung des Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetzes (WissZeitVG) beschlossen, um Nachteile für befristet beschäftigte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler durch die Schutzmaßnahmen im Kontext der Corona-Pandemie zu verhindern. Forschungseinrichtungen und Hochschulen erhalten nun die Möglichkeit, Arbeitsverträge auch über die bisher geltende Höchstgrenze hinaus zu verlängern. Die Allianz der Wissenschaftsorganisationen begrüßt diese Gesetzesänderung ausdrücklich. Sie setzt sich dafür ein, dass die Wissenschaftseinrichtungen von dieser Möglichkeit zugunsten der Personen in der Qualifizierungsphase Gebrauch machen.

The attached paper entitled “Coronavirus Pandemic – Sustainable Ways to Overcome the Crisis” deals with the psychological, social, legal, educational, and economic aspects of the pandemic and describes strategies that may contribute to a gradual return to normality.
